What do you do if you live in a country where all they ever play on the radio is the same 25 songs all day? First - if you happen to be a songwriter, you write your own music. And that's what Dave Mendoza has been doing for the past 30 years; and while none of his songs ever made it into the media humdrum or made him rich and famous, at least he won't be found guilty of driving innocent people insane. Secondly - eventually, if you just happen to be able to scrounge enough change together for a flight ticket (or rubber boat) - you get the heck outta there. And that's what Dave Mendoza is currently doing after two decades of residence in a country whose policies and attitudes toward foreigners of different ethnicities have changed shockingly little over the past 75 years, as he recently had to find out. Well, changes are good for us, and thus, on his way to conquering new horizons and finding his dream, he leaves an audible souvenir of his presence in the West as a farewell gift to a society that has proven over and over again that the only thing we ever learn from history is that we never learn from history. If independent songwriters are your thing and you happen to have an open ear for slightly different tunes than the average drones from the tubes blaring at us non-stop, you might find here a source of inspiration, and perhaps an oasis to help you through another stretch of the dry and dusty desert the big industry boys have made of what we once used to call "culture." Always having claimed to be a dropout of sorts, Mendoza is proving he can still do it: leave the old behind and get ready for something new (begging to differ from the claim that age is what determines whether a person is young or old), and say "see you later" and "hasta la vista" to the past and making his new home the land of tomorrow... If you should ever get tired of the same old rut, maybe we'll see you there... |
